THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

VF-33 transitioned from the F-4J Phantom II to the F-14A Tomcat in 1981. Its Tomcat years included service aboard USS America with Carrier Air Wing One.

America’s air-wing records list VF-33 flying F-14As with AB-series markings during the 1982 NATO Northern Wedding deployment and the Mediterranean deployment of March–September 1986, which included Operation El Dorado Canyon.

The squadron also appears in America’s December 1991–June 1992 deployment roster for the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf. These deployments form part of the Starfighters’ enduring connection to America and the Tomcat era.

This mug honors that history and the aircrews, maintainers, and supporting personnel who made those missions possible.
