History Behind the Design

Tun Tavern is remembered in Marine Corps tradition as the birthplace of the Corps. On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas to raise two battalions of Marines. Marine Corps historical accounts say Nicholas went to Tun Tavern in Philadelphia and appointed tavern proprietor Robert Mullan as the first Marine recruiter. Men gathered there to enlist as Continental Marines during the American Revolution.

That is why Marines still know November 10, 1775 as the Marine Corps birthday and why Tun Tavern remains one of the most recognized names in Marine heritage.
