THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DESIGN
The VF-21 Freelancers became fully operational with the F-14A Tomcat in 1984 after transitioning from the F-4 Phantom II.
In 1991, the squadron remained aboard USS Independence as the carrier became forward deployed to Japan. VF-21 transferred from Carrier Air Wing 14 to Carrier Air Wing 5 and operated from NAF Atsugi, beginning the Japan-based chapter reflected in this design’s Independence association.
The Freelancers supported Operation Southern Watch during the 1990s, including their final deployment aboard Independence in 1995. The squadron was disestablished on January 31, 1996.
This mug celebrates that Tomcat-era legacy and the pilots, radar intercept officers, maintainers, and supporting crews who made it possible.
