THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

VF-11 transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat in 1980, beginning a new chapter in the Red Rippers’ fighter history. Navy aircraft records list the squadron’s F-14A era as 1980–1992, followed by service with later Tomcat variants.

The Red Rippers’ association with USS Forrestal also included an earlier F-4 Phantom II chapter. In 1975, the squadron operated F-4Js from the carrier and conducted frequent intercept missions.

In October 2005, VF-11 was redesignated VFA-11 as the squadron moved into its Super Hornet era. This mug celebrates its Tomcat identity and the enduring connection between squadron, aircraft, and carrier.
