THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

VF-51 received its first F-14A Tomcat on June 16, 1978, beginning its transition from the F-4N Phantom II. The squadron made its first Tomcat deployment aboard USS Kitty Hawk in 1979.

In 1983, the Screaming Eagles operated aboard the newly commissioned USS Carl Vinson with Carrier Air Wing 15 during the carrier’s voyage to its new West Coast homeport.

That association continued through later deployments. During the 1986–1987 cruise, VF-51 conducted winter operations in the Bering Sea. The squadron also sailed with Carl Vinson and CVW-15 on the carrier’s fourth overseas deployment, beginning June 15, 1988.
